A resolution to censure House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) for deliberately misrepresenting President Donald Trump’s conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a congressional hearing now has 61 Republican co-sponsors, Breitbart News reported.
House Resolution 604 was introduced last week by House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and has quickly gained momentum as a way for House Republicans to show their disgust for Schiff’s performance, in which he fabricated a series of statements that Trump and Zelensky supposedly made to each other during their phone call.
It is known with certainty what was actually shared during the telephone conversation because Trump released a transcript of the call, the substance of which was radically different from Schiff’s fictitious portrayal at the hearing.
Fighting back
Republicans are seething about House Democrat allegations that Trump withheld aid from Ukraine on the condition that they investigate Democrat candidate Joe Biden, who had been the frontrunner in the 2020 nomination race at the time of the phone call.
The phone call itself did not contain a quid pro quo, although recently released text messages from Trump administration personnel have since been put forward by Democrats to suggests that aid was indeed withheld to pressure Ukraine into investigating Biden. Connecting Trump definitively to those texts, however, will be another story entirely.
In any case, Schiff has become an easy target for the GOP’s wrath because they believe he clearly crossed the line by straying from the truth and concocting his own version of the call to paint Trump as something akin to a mobster conducting a shakedown. After the backlash against him took root, Schiff attempted to explain by saying that he had merely engaged in a parody of the conversation in question, but his thin excuse didn’t hold water with many, least of all Republicans.
There is little hope, however, that this censure resolution will pass in the House, given that Democrats hold the majority in that chamber.
Impeachment holding pattern
If the House wants to pass articles of impeachment against Trump, it can do so without a single Republican vote. Some Democrats recognize, though, that a partisan impeachment without solid evidence of Trump wrongdoing behind it might do more harm than good at the ballot box next year.
For now, they are engaged in a fishing expedition, trying to find something that will stick before holding a formal vote to move forward in the House. So far, they have largely come up empty while denouncing Trump on a daily basis as corrupt and guilty of impeachable offenses.
Schiff has been one of the loudest voices in the impeachment fight after insisting for more than two years that Trump colluded with Russia and that he had seen evidence to prove it. How he has any credibility left at all remains a mystery.
The House could not find a more partisan, more heavily biased prosecutor to lead impeachment proceedings against Trump than Schiff. His hatred of Trump is palpable, matched only by that exhibited by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
While the introduction of this Republican-backed resolution will in all likelihood be little more than symbolic in nature, it is important for legislators to speak out publicly against the kind of dishonest and utterly reprehensible conduct exhibited by the congressman from California.
