Nancy Pelosi slammed for allowing anti-Semitic imam to deliver prayer on House floor

There has been a growing sense that anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiments are being allowed to take root within the Democratic Party, a suspicion that only gained strength as the result of a decision made last week by Nancy Pelosi.

On Thursday, the House Speaker permitted a Muslim imam to deliver a prayer on the House floor despite the religious leader’s known history of anti-Semitism and declared hatred for the nation of Israel.

Controversial imam

Republican New York Rep. Lee Zeldin discussed his concerns about the imam during an appearance Sunday on Fox & Friends and said Pelosi exercised exceptionally “bad judgement” by allowing the imam to speak.

The imam, Omar Suleiman of Irving, Texas, has used social media to express his support for Palestinian terrorism against Israel, as well as his support for Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Further, he has compared Israelis to Nazis, called Israel an apartheid state, and has a history of supporting the anti-Israel “Boycott, Divest, Sanction” (BDS) movement.

Suleiman was invited to speak by Democratic Texas Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, and though his prayer on the House floor was not particularly controversial in and of itself, his prior record of inflammatory statements most certainly is.

Pelosi’s “horrible judgment”

“Either the speaker’s office did not vet this imam at all, or worse, they did vet the imam and then decided that it would have been OK for the imam to come onto the floor of the House of Representatives anyway,” Zeldin said.

He continued: “Let’s just say all you found was that he compares Israel to Nazis. That would be enough to maybe tell that member or other members of the caucus, ‘How about you find another imam if you want to have an imam give an opening prayer?’

“But, as you pointed out, comparing Israel to terrorists, calling for — and inciting violence — calling for a third Palestinian intifada or the posts on social media that are supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood, as that list goes further on, it’s a bad call to have this person,” he added.

He went on: “It’s a bad call to have this person. It’s horrible judgment, and after the 2019 that we’ve had so far, where members of their own caucus are pushing anti-Semitism and anti-Israel hate, it was a bad judgment.”

Left turning blind eye to anti-Semitism

Fox co-host Pete Hegseth noted the support Suleiman received from various House Democrats, and asked if the anti-Israel, anti-Semitic sentiment expressed by the imam had become “mainstream” and acceptable in the current Democratic Party.

Zeldin, who called out Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib by name, asserted that anti-Semitism and hatred for Israel was “infiltrating American politics, the halls of Congress,” as well as on school campuses.

“You should be more sensitive to it, not less sensitive,” Zeldin said of the rampant anti-Semitism on display in recent months. “You’re seeing a desensitizing right now that is hugely dangerous if that takes over more and more of the Democratic Party.”
