Weekend gun violence in Chicago leaves 5 dead, 43 wounded

Make sure to let us know what you think... we now have comments turned ON below the article!

There has been a significant amount of talk about gun control over the past couple of weeks following a spate of mass shootings that resulted in multiple tragic deaths and left dozens of others wounded, with much of the discussion focused on banning so-called “assault weapons,” expanding background checks for legal gun purchases, and preemptive “red flag” confiscation laws.

But while Democrats and the predominately liberal media center their attention on the terrible toll of mass shooting incidents, little to nothing is ever said of the fact that similar numbers die and are wounded virtually every weekend in major urban centers like Chicago, where five people were killed and 43 others wounded by gunfire over the weekend.

Another violent weekend

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the five Chicagoans murdered between Friday and Sunday ranged in age from 16- to 47-years-old, with three of those shooting deaths occurring within moments of each other in separate parts of the city during the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 16-year-old boy had been riding around in a vehicle shortly before 2 a.m. when he was struck in the head with a bullet fired by someone on the sidewalk.

Just a few minutes later, a 19-year-old man standing with a group of people was shot and later pronounced dead at a hospital, while roughly 30 minutes earlier a 29-year-old man walking along a sidewalk was approached and fired upon by a group of men. That 29-year-old man ultimately died about 14 hours later at a hospital.

Later on Saturday evening, a 47-year-old man was shot twice while sitting inside his parked vehicle, while just a few hours after that a man from a suburb outside the city was killed in what appears to have been a drive-by shooting.

Tragic par for the course

Of the dozens of wounded victims during the hail of gunfire over the weekend, the youngest was a little 8-year-old girl who was hit with a bullet from a drive-by shooting on Sunday afternoon while playing in a park during a family barbeque.

As for the intense focus Democrats and the media have put on mass shootings — defined as four or more individuals shot in a single incident — it appears as though they simply pick and choose which mass shootings to which they will pay attention, as there was at least one, if not more, “mass shootings” in Chicago over the weekend, such as a drive-by shooting early Sunday morning on a large gathering outdoors that left six people wounded, five of them women.

As terrible as this carnage is, it is a story that plays out virtually every weekend in cities like Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, St. Louis, and many others.

Unfortunately, the national media rarely grant much coverage to the horrifying weekly tallies of dead and wounded due to gun violence in the inner cities, instead spending inordinate amounts of time obsessing over high-profile random occurrences like statistically rare, albeit still horrifying, mass shootings in schools, retail stores or other unexpected locations.

Turning a blind eye

One rather cynical reason the weekly barrage of urban violence receives little media attention is that it typically doesn’t fit the preferred media narrative, in that most of the violence is perpetrated by known gang members and repeat criminal offenders armed with stolen or illegally purchased handguns — not “assault weapons” wielded by psychotic white racists — and occur in locales that have already implemented most, if not all, of the same sort of gun control measures Democrats want to impose on the rest of the country.

Given the huge disparity in coverage between random mass shootings and the week in/week out violence that transpires in Democrat-controlled inner-cities, it is difficult for many gun owners — who truly do want to see solutions to reduce the rate of gun violence — to take Democrats and the media seriously with their feigned outrage and unworkable, if blatantly unconstitutional, proposed fixes.
