From the very day he was sworn into office, there have been elected Democrats in Congress demanding the impeachment of President Donald Trump for a variety of reasons, despite there being no evidence of “high crimes and misdemeanors” that would warrant his removal from office.
The latest Democrat politician to call for such action is 2020 hopeful and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who, in typical political doublespeak, asserted that she wasn’t running for office on impeaching Trump, even as she argued that such proceedings should begin immediately.
“Not running on impeachment”
The Washington Examiner reported that Warren’s remarks came while she was speaking with reporters following a campaign event in New Hampshire on Saturday.
Asked about the effort by some House Democrats to start the impeachment process against Trump and where she stood on the matter, Warren replied: “I’m not running on impeachment.”
She went on: “I didn’t expect to have to say anything about impeachment until the Mueller report came out. And I started that afternoon reading it. I read all into the night and into the early hours of the next morning, fell asleep, picked it up, and finished reading all four-hundred-and-forty-eight pages of it.”
However…
“When I got to the end, I knew three things,” Warren continued. “First, a hostile foreign government had attacked our 2016 election for the purpose of helping Donald Trump. Second, that Donald Trump as a candidate had welcomed that help.
“And third, that now as president, when the federal government tried to investigate those first two things, Donald Trump did everything he could to obstruct justice. That means it comes under the Constitution of the United States — to us — the Congress,” she said.
Warren went on to say that she believes “that the case has been made fully in the Mueller documents, with footnotes and affidavits. It is time for us to begin impeachment proceedings. And we should have a vote in the House and then in the Senate. And let everyone live with those votes for the rest of their lives,” the senator added.
Just one problem
Perhaps Warren read a different Mueller report than everyone else — or read more into the it than was actually there — because the lengthy tome utterly failed to make the case for impeachment in any way, shape, or form.
Indeed, while the Mueller investigation found that Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 election — something that nation has done for decades in prior elections and will almost certainly continue to do so in the future — there was zero evidence and no new indictments referenced in the report suggesting that any Americans colluded or conspired or coordinated with the Russians during the 2016 election.
Nor were there sufficient facts discovered to support charges of obstruction of justice, given that no underlying crime was committed that could have formed the basis of obstruction and also that Mueller’s two-year, wide-ranging investigation into all things Trump was in fact allowed to proceed to its conclusion unimpeded.
Those realities don’t comport with the hurt feelings of Democrats still stinging over losing in 2016, however, so they will continue to screech impotently about impeachment even as they try to half-heartedly claim, as Warren just did, that Trump’s removal from office really isn’t a top priority, when it so obviously is.
