President Donald Trump hasn’t been shy about showing his appreciation for our nation’s military veterans — and this week was no exception.

President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday essentially wiping out all federal student loan debt for more than 25,000 permanently disabled veterans across the U.S., Fox News reports.

Making life easier

Trump announced the move during a speech in Louisville, Kentucky at the 75th National Convention of American Veterans, also known as AMVETS. The president noted in his remarks that under his administration, the unemployment rate among vets is at an all-time low.

Additionally, his administration recently expanded the GI Bill, Trump said, allowing more veterans to further their educations.

But even with the GI Bill, some veterans still incur federal student loan debt. Luckily, at least some of them are about to have that debt forgiven.

“In a few moments, I will sign a memorandum directing the Department of Education to eliminate every penny of federal student loan debt owed by American veterans who are completely and permanently disabled,” Trump said Wednesday. “Nobody can complain about that, right? Nobody can complain about that. The debt of these disabled veterans will be entirely erased. It’ll be gone.”

Trump said that “altogether, this action will wipe out an average of $30,000 in debt owed by more than 25,000 eligible veterans who have made immense sacrifices” for the United States.

“They have made a sacrifice that’s so great,” the president added, “and they’re such incredible people. And they never complain. They never complain. That’s hundreds of millions of dollars in student debt held by our severely wounded warriors. It’s gone forever.”

The president said that no federal taxes would be imposed on the forgiven debts, and he urged all 50 states to follow suit. Several states have already done so.

Helping our heroes

In his speech, the president also touched on other things his administration has accomplished for the nation’s veterans, including the Veterans Affairs Accountability Act, which makes it easier for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to fire bad employees, as well as other measures that improve VA health care and provide more options for veterans in need.

Trump’s administration has also made a concerted effort to improve mental health care for veterans, in part with hopes of lowering suicide rates among vets.

On Wednesday, Trump said America “owes our heroes a supreme debt of gratitude.” Forgiving the debts of tens of thousands of them is just one of the ways he’s showing it.
