Students stunned after finding out tough immigration quote was by Obama, not Trump

The prevailing narrative among the liberal media is that President Donald Trump’s immigration policies are racist and anti-immigrant, when in reality — save for Trump’s bombast and the media portrayal — there isn’t all that much difference between the Trump’s policies and those of former President Barack Obama.

Cabot Phillips of Campus Reform exposed the remarkable duality in opinions of how immigration enforcement was handled by Obama versus Trump by sharing an Obama quote on the topic with college students to gauge their reaction.

Obama or Trump?

Phillips spoke with a number of students at Georgetown University, prefacing the discussion by noting how Trump intended to ramp up internal enforcement of immigration laws against known illegal aliens with criminal records who’d already been ordered deported by a judge.

He then provided the quote from a 2014 White House address on illegal immigration by President Obama, who stated, “We are a nation of laws. Undocumented workers broke our immigration laws, and I believe that they must be held accountable, especially those who may be dangerous.”

“That’s why over the past six years deportations of criminals are up 80 percent, and that’s why we’re going to keep focusing on threats to our security,” the quote continued.

“Racism and xenophobia”

All of the students Phillips spoke with assumed the quote had come from President Trump, and the remark was widely criticized as being racist, xenophobic, and immoral with regard to migrants who were simply seeking a better life in the United States.

“I think that policy comes from a place of white American nationalism,” said one female student. Another female student said, “Donald Trump has embraced this rhetoric of racism and xenophobia that’s not beneficial to our country at all.”

Other students asserted that the quote and policy were “not moral” and “awful” and a “bad decision,” among other critiques.

“Shows the hypocrisy in politics”

Phillips then revealed that the quote had actually come from Obama in 2014, and asked if that changed their thoughts on the matter.

Virtually all expressed their shock and surprise that it had been Obama who’d spoken out so forcefully in favor of deporting criminal illegal aliens, as they’d all expected such a comment to have come from nobody other than Trump.

One student, however, “gets it” and hit the nail on the head with his response: “I mean it just shows the hypocrisy in politics. One person can say something five years ago and next thing you know it doesn’t apply to them anymore and they can now be the morality police for whoever is in office now.”

The mainstream media provided minimal coverage of the Obama administration’s efforts at enforcing immigration laws but the Trump administration’s policies have received tons of predominately negative attention.

That difference in media coverage is almost solely to blame for the ignorance of the students, and the media should be ashamed of how they have misled the American people on this and other important topics.
