Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has stood adamantly opposed to President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure our nation’s southern border, and has refused to provide even a paltry sum of funding requested by the president for that purpose.
Yet, video has emerged from less than 10 years ago in which Schumer sang a far different tune on border security and illegal immigration, one that could easily serve as a duet with the president these days.
The Daily Wire‘s Ryan Saavedra reported Schumer delivered a speech in 2009 to the 6th Annual Immigration Law and Policy Conference at Georgetown University, one in which he spoke strongly about how securing the southern border and preventing illegal immigration must serve as the foundation for any sort of immigration law reform.

“The first of these seven principles is that illegal immigration is wrong, plain and simple,” said Schumer. “When we use phrases like ‘undocumented workers,’ we convey a message to the American people that their government is not serious about combating illegal immigration, which the American people overwhelmingly oppose.”
Schumer also said, “People who enter the United States without our permission are illegal aliens, and illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who entered the United States legally.” He added, “Any immigration solution must recognize that we must do as much as we can to gain operational control of our borders as soon as possible.”
The senator also highlighted the efficacy of the border fencing that Congress had previously approved and seen built, and said, “Between 2005 and 2009, a vast amount of progress has been made on our borders and ports of entry.” He explained, “This progress includes … construction of 630 miles of border fence that create a significant barrier to illegal immigration on our southern land border.”

Support for border fence and deportation
But that wasn’t the only example of Schumer talking tough on illegal immigration in the not too distant past.
Even more recent examples were also uncovered during his speeches on the floor of the Senate in 2013 in support of the effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform. In those speeches, he referred to illegal aliens as “criminals” who must be punished for their crimes and deported, and heralded the funding included for more border fence construction.

In years past, Schumer sounded an awful lot like President Trump when it comes to border security and illegal immigration, which begs the question: What changed?
But we all know exactly what changed — the election of Donald Trump — which has compelled formerly reasonable people to abandon prior positions and adopt whatever stance is currently in opposition to Trump, no matter what it is.

President Trump should invite Schumer to the Oval Office again for another publicized discussion, only this time he should play these old clips right in front of him and the international media and ask him bluntly why his position has shifted so dramatically.
