Poll: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s views on Amazon don’t align with her constituents

Make sure to let us know what you think... we now have comments turned ON below the article!

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez likes to portray herself as some sort of revolutionary leader of the people, one who is sharply in tune with her constituents and ready to go to battle on their behalf.

But a recent poll suggests that the freshman congresswoman’s views don’t align with her constituents’ — at least when it comes to the Amazon HQ that was set to be built in New York.

Ocasio-Cortez led a staunch and successful opposition effort against the now-dead plan, but according to the poll, that’s not what the people she represents wanted.

Reviving the deal

New York’s deal with Amazon would have brought an estimated 25,000 new jobs to the area — and it seems those living in NYC wish those opportunities were still on the table.

After Ocasio-Cortez told Amazon to get packing, some state legislators in New York started a push to “revive” the deal reached between the Jeff Bezos-headed company and the Empire State. That push has the support of 61% of all New York City voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted in late March.

Thirty-two percent said they were opposed to reinstating the deal.

Even in the borough of Queens, a portion of which is included in Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional district, voters approved attempts to revive the Amazon deal by a margin of 58%-34%.

Additionally, nearly 60% of voters in the Bronx, also in AOC’s district, supported efforts to woo back Amazon. Thirty-six percent were opposed.

Tax battle

For her part, Ocasio-Cortez has made clear that her opposition to the deal centers around tax incentives promised to Amazon by both New York state and New York City, who sought to sweeten the deal and win Amazon over after months of bidding between major U.S. cities for the chance to house the new Amazon HQ.

Those tax incentives totaled about $3 billion, which Ocasio-Cortez seemed to mistakenly believe was comprised of funds the city planned to give directly to Amazon as a subsidy. In reality, the deal involved a tax credit, which merely would have allowed Amazon to keep money they normally would have paid in taxes.

But Ocasio-Cortez was out of line with her constituents on this matter, too. By a margin of 54%-42% percent, voters in the Quinnipiac poll supported the idea of offering tax credits to businesses and corporations that would encourage them to move into the city.

Amazon’s worst nightmare

That poll came just a few weeks after another poll by Siena College that revealed that Ocasio-Cortez received the brunt of the blame from voters for squashing the deal. AOC was named as the biggest “villain” in the effort to kill the Amazon HQ plans by 38% of voters, and a whopping 67% of voters disapproved of the congresswoman’s efforts.

Twenty-one percent approved.

Sixty-one percent of respondents to the Siena poll also said they wanted political leaders to try and bring back the Amazon deal. Thirty percent disagreed.

The Quinnipiac and Siena polls coincided with a report from the New York Post that revealed that a number of Ocasio-Cortez’s constituents were disappointed in the congresswoman for seemingly forgetting about them now that she is in Washington. They accused her of focusing her attention on national matters and partisan games — instead of the people she represents.

AOC can claim she is a champion of the proletariat all she wants as she pretends to slay the capitalist dragons of the bourgeoisie, but voters aren’t really buying it. Capitalism wins again.
