Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez throws social media tantrum after poll reveals drop in her favorability

Make sure to let us know what you think... we now have comments turned ON below the article!

By now, the pattern has become exceedingly clear: Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will say something ignorant or provocative, receive critical pushback for her remarks, and then play the victim and blame everything from the media to racism and sexism and blind partisanship for the typically well-deserved criticism.

That trend continued once again on Saturday as Ocasio-Cortez took to social media to lash out in response to a recent poll which revealed that the congresswoman’s net favorability rating was declining as more Americans became familiar with her.

Unfavorability rating skyrockets

The aforementioned survey results came from Gallup on Friday, when the polling organization revealed that, as of the end of February, Ocasio-Cortez was viewed favorably by 31 percent of Americans and unfavorably by 41 percent of Americans, for a net favorability rating of -10 percent.

Those numbers were compared to a similar Gallup poll taken in Sept. 2018, right after she shockingly won her primary election over a ten-term incumbent, when her favorable and unfavorable ratings were only separated by two points, 24 percent favorable to 26 percent unfavorable.

It was noted that the rapid shift in her unfavorability came alongside a significant surge in her name recognition — 50 percent had never heard of her or had no opinion in the initial poll, as compared to only 29 percent who said the same in the latest survey — meaning that the more Americans have come to know Ocasio-Cortez, the more they dislike what they see.

Further, the poll showed that along demographic lines, Ocasio-Cortez was “underwater” with most demographic groups, and only performed well among groups of which she counts herself as a member, specifically non-white female Democrats in the 18-34 age range.

Racism and sexism and Fox News, oh my!

Almost as if on cue, the congresswoman took to Twitter on Saturday to blame the poor polling results on racism, sexism and Fox News, which she maligned as nothing more than a biased propaganda machine that was akin to a gossip media outlet such as TMZ.

In response to a now-deleted tweet, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “If you want to know what subconscious bias looks like, it’s a headline saying ‘AOC is underwater with every group EXCEPT women, nonwhites, and 18-34 year olds.’ So older, conservative white men are considered ‘everyone’ and everyone else is discounted as an exception. Cool”

She quickly followed that post with a second tweet: “The reason people know more is bc Fox News has turned into ‘AOC TMZ’ (no offense to TMZ), so awareness is growing w/ GOPers. @JaneMayerNYer has reported deeply on this propaganda machine + it will be aimed at any Dem they want. Nothing changes that. We can’t be scared by that.”

Predictably wrong response

This response from Ocasio-Cortez to the bad polling news was as predictable as it was wrong. Had she actually looked at the details of the poll results, she would have seen that while she still held slight favorable ratings with some groups, she lost ground among most of them, particularly among independent voters, but even among women and the 18-34 age group generally.

Furthermore, claiming that Fox News is a propaganda outfit while citing a known leftist mouthpiece like Jane Mayer of the New Yorker is itself a rather bold exercise in hypocrisy.

In truth, the reason Fox News — and other media outlets — spend so much time talking about the freshman congresswoman is because she simply can’t stop herself from saying and doing idiotic things on a near daily basis. Any resulting decline in favorability is utterly self-inflicted and has nothing to do with her race or gender, despite her protests to the contrary.
