Michelle Obama confirms there is ‘zero chance’ she will run for president

There has yet to emerge a clear favorite among the roughly two dozen Democratic presidential candidates who would be an odds-on favorite to defeat President Donald Trump in 2020, and worried Democrats are beginning to look elsewhere.

One name that is repeatedly mentioned as a potential last-minute candidate is former first lady Michelle Obama — but she has again confirmed that she has no interest in taking on that mantle.

Young reporter asks the question on every Democrats’ mind

The former first lady recently participated in an interview with a 12-year-old reporter for Amtrak’s exclusive magazine The National, and while much of the conversation revolved around her upbringing in Chicago, her new memoir “Becoming,” and her message for young Americans, she was also asked about her political ambitions.

The pre-teen reporter said, “A lot of people want you to run for president. You’ve publicly said that you aren’t interested, but everyone says that until they actually run.”

“Just between us, if you thought the country needed you and you thought you could really help our nation, is there even a one percent chance you’d consider running?” he asked.

“Zero chance”

Michelle Obama replied, “Just between us, and the readers of this magazine — there’s zero chance.”

“There are so many ways to improve this country and build a better world, and I keep doing plenty of them, from working with young people to helping families lead healthier lives. But sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office will never be one of them. It’s just not for me,” the former first lady added.

Her response has been consistent throughout the election season and should serve to quiet, if not silence completely, the increasingly desperate speculation from some on the left that Obama might swoop in at the last minute and save the party from certain defeat at Trump’s hand.

“Not interested in politics”

In March, late-night comedian Conan O’Brien asked Michelle Obama about the possibility of her being more involved in the 2020 election than just supporting whoever the Democratic Party nominated.

Obama said that, aside from the fact that she was “not interested in politics,” she further had no desire to alienate roughly half of the country by getting involved in the increasingly contentious R vs. D battle that modern-day politics has become.

Instead, she’d rather someone else take the lead so that she could continue to focus her attention on reaching as many people with her message as possible and serving as an inspiration to young people of all ideological stripes.

In other words, it looks like Democrats will need to search elsewhere for a challenger worthy of Trump.
