Government watchdog group Judicial Watch has filed a congressional ethics complaint against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) alleging that she committed perjury and immigration fraud along with other possible offenses, the Daily Caller reported.
The complaint stems from allegations that Omar married her biological brother so he could come to the U.S. Omar has denied these claims, but they are gaining traction as more investigations take place.
Investigating Ilhan
Judicial Watch has asked the House ethics office to investigate potential criminal conduct involving perjury, marriage fraud, immigration fraud, state and federal tax fraud, and federal student loan fraud.
The watchdog group says that substantial, compelling, and, to date, unrefuted evidence shows that Omar married Ahmed Elmi, a man who is in fact her brother. Elmi then attended college in the U.S. before returning to Great Britain in 2012.
Information forming the basis of the complaint was gathered from public records, social media postings, genealogy databases, computer forensic analysis, unaltered digital photographs, and discussions with several investigative reporters working on the case in Great Britain and Somalia.
Indices of fraud
Documents gathered by Judicial Watch showed that Omar lived with and fathered children with another man, Ahmed Hirsi, during her marriage to Elmi. Omar also swore under oath in 2017 while trying to divorce Elmi that she had not seen or had contact with Elmi since 2011, even though documents prove that the two had contact on social media and were photographed together in London in 2015.
Judical Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement that there is “overwhelming” evidence that Omar broke the law and that the House must “urgently investigate and resolve the serious allegations of wrongdoing” by the congresswoman.
Scott Johnson of PowerLineBlog, Daniel Steinberg of PJMedia, and Preya Samsundar, who now runs the Minnesota and Iowa GOP worked together to compile the assertions included in the complaint.
Facing the music
With the House currently in the hands of Democrats, it seems unlikely that the complaints will be taken very seriously by the House Ethics Committee. For anything to happen to Omar, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would have to sanction it, and the odds of that are slim, at best.
There is a way for the complaint to move beyond the House, however. A House ethics complaint can be used by the Justice Department as grounds to initiate a federal investigation. There certainly appears to be enough evidence for the DOJ to conduct a probe into Omar’s tangled history, but whether officials there will decide to do so remains to be seen.
At the very least, Omar is in the hot seat and facing serious repercussions if the House should turn Republican or the DOJ should get involved. Maybe the allegations will be strong enough to force Omar’s resignation from Congress. If nothing else, perhaps her power as one of the far left “Squad” will be substantially diminished by the questions that surround her past.
Omar’s fellow Democrats and willing accomplices in the media have done all they can to hide her alleged offenses and turn attention away from her possible crimes. But now there is documentation on the record about what she has done, and it can no longer be swept under the rug. One way or another, Omar will eventually have to answer for her actions, and with any luck, that will happen sooner rather than later.
