Ronan Farrow says Harvey Weinstein tried to leverage ties to Hillary Clinton to get incriminating story dropped

Investigative journalist Ronan Farrow played an indispensable role in exposing disgraced Hollywood financier Harvey Weinstein for his history of sexual misconduct — and now, Farrow has written a book detailing the efforts launched by Weinstein and his associates to kill the explosive story before it could be published.

According to Farrow, Weinstein leveraged his close relationship with Hillary Clinton to send an unmistakable message: Farrow alleges that Weinstein pressured him to drop the story if the journalist wanted to be able to interview Clinton for a separate project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Breaking down the walls

The Reporter was granted a sneak peek at Farrow’s new book, titled Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators, which is set to be released on Oct. 15.

In the book, Farrow documents the utter turmoil his life became as he sought interviews with various Weinstein victims and associates as part of the explosive story he was building that ultimately — in conjunction with a similar effort from The New York Times — exposed Weinstein for the creep that he was, and helped launch the #MeToo movement in late 2017.

A great deal of the book centers on NBC, the network Farrow worked for when he was putting the bombshell story together. Farrow recounted how Weinstein used a variety of “carrots and sticks” — offers of content, rather than threats and intimidation — to keep his wrongdoing under wraps.

In the end, NBC withdrew all support for Farrow and even fired him before his story on Weinstein was released, a move that was expected to have killed the story. But Farrow took his killed story to The New Yorker — and the rest is history.

Weinstein buddies up with Clinton

But it wasn’t just NBC that Weinstein leaned on in an effort to scare Farrow away from the story about the producer’s misdeeds. Weinstein also reportedly used his ties to Hillary Clinton, a politician who he’d helped raise millions of dollars for over the years, to suppress the story.

Farrow explained that he had tried to arrange an interview with Clinton in mid-2017 for a separate book he was writing on foreign policy — while, at the same time, working on his Weinstein story — when “he received a call from Clinton’s publicist, Nick Merrill, who told him that the ‘big story’ Farrow was working on was a ‘concern for us.'”

Hearkening back to the carrot-and-stick method Weinstein preferred to keep NBC in line, Farrow says Weinstein had also pitched an exclusive docu-series on Hillary Clinton to NBC, a rather transparent attempt to again use his close relationship with the Clintons to maintain silence from the network.

Farrow’s account of this development matches remarks he made in April 2018, according to The Washington Free Beacon.

“Hillary Clinton had scheduled an interview while I was at the height of the Weinstein reporting, and her folks got in touch and said, ‘We hear you’re working on a big story,’ sounded very concerned, and tried to cancel that interview…over the Weinstein stuff,” Farrow told ABC News.

Add on top of that the inordinate length of time (five full days) it took Clinton to comment on Weinstein’s misdeeds after the bombshell story explode — not to mention suspicion that Clinton was fully aware of Weinstein’s history of sexual misconduct — and it is hard to argue that Clinton and her people were doing anything other than attempting to kill Farrow’s story and protect their scandalous money-man in Hollywood. So disgusting.
