The only thing between Trump and removal

Make sure to let us know what you think... we now have comments turned ON below the article!

The Senate has been the only obstacle between President Trump and removal from office.

Republican senators strongly defended the president during the impeachment trial, and they didn’t cave to the left during the Kavanaugh hearings. The Senate has also been instrumental in placing President Trump’s appointees in the federal court system.

If the Senate goes blue in 2020, and the house remains blue, President Trump will be a lame-duck president, assuming he wins his own election. It is not enough to vote Trump in. He has to have support in at least one of the legislative chambers.

Supporting Republican senators, even if they are not your own, is a good strategy to keep the Senate Red. It may be the only governmental body opposing full-blown socialism if Joe Biden wins in 2020. You can donate to any of the Republican senators running at winred.com.

The 2020 elections

The Republicans

Having said that, here are the senators that face re-election this year. According to 270towin.com, there are 20 Republican incumbents running for re-election, and three open Republican seats.

13 of those seats are considered in play, with the other 10 considered safe, meaning, the incumbent will win, or the seat will remain Republican.

The “safe” seats

Firstly, the seats that are considered safe:

  • Tom Cotton of Arkansas
  • Jim Risch of Idaho
  • Bill Cassidy of Louisiana
  • Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi
  • Ben Sasse of Nebraska
  • Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma
  • Mike Rounds of South Dakota
  • Lamar Alexander’s seat of Tennessee (Alexander is not running)
  • Shelly Capito of West Virginia
  • Mike Enzi’s seat of Wyoming (Enzi is not running)

Republican seats in play

  • Dan Sullivan of Alaska
  • Martha McSally of Arizona
  • Cory Gardner of Colorado
  • Kelly Loeffler of Georgia
  • David Purdue of Georgia
  • Joni Ernst of Iowa
  • Pat Roberts seat of Kansas (Roberts is not running in 2020)
  • Mitch McConnell of Kentucky
  • Susan Collins of Maine
  • Steve Daines of Montana
  • Thom Tillis of North Carolina
  • Lindsay Graham of South Carolina
  • John Cornyn of Texas

These seats range from toss-ups to likely to stay Republican.

The leader of the Senate, Mitch McConnell is facing a lot of opposition because of his very visible role in ending the impeachment debacle in the Senate. He openly supported President Trump, and he has a big target on his back. The Democrats really want to get rid of him, but he is one of the most senior Senators and he is a master of the rules of the Senate. Republicans really can’t afford to lose McConnell.

Senator Lindsay Graham has also been vocal in his support for the president and he is investigating Crossfire Hurricane and the Steele Dossier. You can bet the deep state is working hard to get rid of him.

The Democrats

There are only 12 Democrat Senate seats up for re-election. 7 of them are considered safe, with the other 5 contested.

The contested Democrat seats:

  • Doug Jones of Alabama
  • Gary Peters of Michigan
  • Tina Smith of Minnesota
  • Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire
  • Tom Udall of New Mexico

The safe Democrat seats:

  • Chris Coons of Delaware
  • Dick Durbin of Illinois
  • Ed Markey of Massachusetts
  • Cory Booker of New Jersey
  • Jeff Merkley of Oregon
  • Jack Reed of Rhode Island
  • Mark Warner of Virginia

Best case scenario:

Republicans keep all their seats and gain a couple of Democrat seats, too.
