It’s official: the United Kingdom is leaving the swamp

Make sure to let us know what you think... we now have comments turned ON below the article!

The British people made their voices heard a second time in a historic election in the UK on December 12th. They showed that they were done with EU for the second time, since parliament didn’t believe them the first time. And now Queen Elizabeth is opening Parliament with instructions to get the job done by the end of January.

The UK wants out of the EU for trade reasons, currency reasons, immigration reasons, and sovereignty reasons – and they want out ASAP.

The Labour Party stonewalled the people

The Labour party thought they could drag out Brexit long enough that the people would forget about it, so they continually opposed what was clearly the will of the people. Consequently, the Conservative Party, led by the weak Prime Minister Theresa May, did not have enough of a majority to get Brexit done.

May finally stepped aside, after years of wrangling in the House of Commons over how Brexit should be done. With her out of the way the Conservative party held a special election to choose a new party leader.

Boris Johnson becomes the Prime Minister

Boris Johnson resoundingly won the special election for leader of the Conservative party with 66% of the vote in the summer of 2019. After his victory he promised: “to deliver Brexit, unite the country and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.”

Johnson then formed a new government and got busy working on Brexit, but the Labour Party continued to frustrate all attempts to leave the EU.

Boris Johnson gambles and wins

Johnson finally took a huge risk that might have ended with the Conservative party losing the majority and Johnson losing his position. He called for a general election to be held on December 12. All of the seats were up for grabs.

It was a huge gamble, but the British people gave the Conservative party an 80-seat majority in a landslide victory. The Labour party and Jeremy Corbyn were thoroughly beaten and demoralized. They are still trying to explain why Labour took such a beating. Johnson claimed a mandate to get the UK out of the EU.

The United Kingdom will leave the European Union

With Johnson as the Prime Minister and a huge Conservative majority in Parliament, the UK is exiting the European Union by January 31st, 2020.  There will be some pain involved since the UK provided over 13% of the EU budget which amounts to about 13 billion Euros each year. It has been an important pillar of the EU,  but always with reservations. Those reservations have won the day.

The EU Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans wrote a letter to chide a little and to express his love for the UK. The EU opposed Brexit all along and didn’t make it easy on them, so the letter is a bit ironic. The EU had a chance to make things better for the UK while they were still part of the EU but they didn’t and now it is too late.

The US and the UK are fighting similar battles

It is natural to cheer for the United Kingdom in their struggle to throw off the administrative stranglehold of the EU and to be a sovereign nation again, free to make decisions that serve the needs of the people in the UK. Their story closely parallels our own here in America as we struggle to be free of an administrative state that actively opposes the will of the people. The European Union is the European swamp.

The Queen approves

Queen Elizabeth II opened Parliament on December 19th and charged the government to finish Brexit by January 31st, 2020.
