Rudy Giuliani divorce proceedings get nasty

Former New York City mayor and current personal attorney to President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, is in the middle of a divorce from his third wife, Judith Nathan. A divorce court hearing as part of the proceedings — which first began in April — got ugly on Wednesday as the couple’s attorneys battled over money.

Giuliani’s estranged wife is seeking substantial amounts of spousal support, but Giuliani’s attorney argued that the presidential lawyer no longer has the income to support his soon-to-be-ex’s lifestyle — since he is working for the president for free.

Nathan wants Giuliani to pay the expenses for multiple homes they share, her personal assistant, her mother — who lives in an assisted-living home — and an additional $63,000 per month in direct spousal support.

“Sudden income deficit syndrome”

Nathan’s attorney, Bernard Clair, characterized Giuliani’s claim that he wasn’t making as much money as he was before as “sudden income deficit syndrome,” or SIDS.

“The symptoms of the SIDS program is front and center: First, Mr. Giuliani claims financial trouble, financial trouble that existed only post-commencement (of the divorce proceeding), according to his statements. His actions and his finances and his expenses don’t comport with the claim of his income diminishment,” argued Clair in Manhattan Supreme Court.

But Giuliani’s attorney, Faith Miller, took exception to the “SIDS” remark as “insulting” and offensive. Miller explained that Giuliani’s income had essentially been halved over the past year — from more than $9 million in 2017 to less than $5 million in 2018 — because he left his lucrative law firm job to work for the president for free, rendering Nathan’s support requests “unaffordable.”

Excessive spending

However, Nathan’s attorney claimed that Giuliani’s expenses over the past six months totaled more than $900,000 — reportedly including more than $12,000 on cigars and more than $7,000 on pens.

Nathan’s attorney also claimed that Giuliani had spent more than $286,000 on his alleged “mistress” — Maria Rosa Ryan — and her daughter over a five-month period.

“Straight out, my client doesn’t care about romantic interests or otherwise. She doesn’t care about Dr. Ryan and Mrs. Ryan. What she cares about is these expenses for these people are continuing while she has not received any direct support since August of this year,” Clair said.

But Guiliani’s attorney said that the claims Giuliani had spent so much on Ryan were “debunked.” Miller also pushed back against the insinuation that Giuliani shouldn’t have taken the job with Trump for free, while suggesting that Nathan, 63, was perfectly capable of getting a job of her own to afford her lifestyle.

“Based on a 30-year relationship with Mr. Trump, he was asked to serve in his capacity without compensation. Mrs. Giuliani has a profession (but) she doesn’t work. She’s much younger than my client. She could work. She chooses not to,” Miller said.

Put a lid on it

Giuliani’s attorney also requested the judge issue a gag order in order to stop Nathan and her attorney from speaking about the divorce with the media.

Judge Michael Katz is expected to issue rulings on the gag order request and divorce proceedings as a whole at a later date.
